Shoulder Arthroscopy

Shoulder arthroscopy is a surgical procedure in which an arthroscopic camera is inserted into the shoulder to inspect, diagnose, or repair problems inside a shoulder joint. As a patient the benefits of an arthroscopic shoulder surgery include smaller incisions, typically faster recovery, less post-operative pain, and less scarring.

Arthroscopy may be recommended for shoulder issues including:

  • Evaluation and treatment of instability
  • A torn or damaged cartilage ring (labrum) or biceps tendon
  • A torn rotator cuff
  • Stiffness of the shoulder
  • Arthritis of the end of the clavicle
  • Treatment of frozen shoulder
  • Removal of loose bodies
  • Debridement / drainage of shoulder joint infection

During surgery, small incisions will be made around the joint area. In one portal, the arthroscope is inserted to view the inside of the shoulder joint. Along with the arthroscope, sterile solution is pumped in which expands the joint, providing the surgeon a clear view and room to work. The other incision area is used for the insertion of surgical instruments to probe various parts within the joint to repair the damaged shoulder.

Shoulder Arthroscopy is much less traumatic to the muscles, ligaments, and tissues than the traditional method of surgically opening the shoulder with long incisions (open techniques). If you are currently experiencing shoulder pain, we welcome the opportunity to meet with you to evaluate your shoulder condition and discuss potential treatment options.
